One night i was watching No Reservations hosted by Anthony Bordain.He was visiting my hometown seattle and of course eating.During the show there was a segment about these private dinners chefs were putting which is an exclusive club that only the elite can get in.I thought that was so cool but why make it so exclusive?There's plenty of talented cooks,chefs out here.Right then and there i had a plan to something like that but with cooks and some chefs because in the end we are all cooks and there are alot of really good ones out there.On top of that idea,there is the pop up dinners which are the new craze where chefs take over a restaurant space and do anywhere from 1-3 day events for a set price,setup,shutdown then popup again in a totally different place.I figured why not combine both and put one on every month?That's where I came up with "A Night with Us".Three to four cooks a set amount of guests wine cocktail paring as well as entertainment under one roof.It took about three months to plan but i got it together with a great team consisting of my friends that i work with,ride bikes with etc.The location was an artist loft that we converted into a candlelit dinner for 20 guests.The cooks consisted of Nate Simmons, sous chef at Cicchetti,Clayton Kinsey, line cook at Serafina, Sarah Muhammed (desserts) server at Serafina and I.Sommelier Solomon Navarro of Serafina,mixologist Luke Mckinley of Ravish Seth Sexton,server and bartender of both Serafina and Cicchetti. The rest of the team were,photographers Blu still of blu still photography and his friend Emerson and additional help of kitchen staff from culinary school and of course servers.It was a stressful few days before all the way up to the hour before the event.To make the evening a blessed one we had a singer player flamenco guitar serenading to the guests making it a beautiful night.The menu:15 courses cocktail and wine pairing.That's right FIFTEEN! Zampone,sweet bread po boys,chicken fried beef tongue,chocolate and caramel cheesecake with bing cherry relish was just some of the dishes prepared for that night!How did the guest s think about everything?They loved it!At $150 per person we had to give them best food they've had and we did it.It was a success but also a tough night for everyone but in the end everyone had a great time with guests yearning for the next one!I took about three days and i'm back at it looking for new locations as well as cooks.So be on the lookout for A DJ and a Cook coming to a neighborhood near you!

Victoria Tweed Ride 2011

Well Victoria's 1st annual Tweed Ride was a success despite a tiny sprinkle of rain,but in the end there were laughs,tea,beautiful neighborhoods,lots of bikes and lots of tweed!We met in front of the ever famous Empress at noon slowly one by one dapper riders were showing up in the finest attire with smiles on their preparing for a fun day!Tandems, penny farthings,trikes and more began filling the yards of the Empress.After about an hour meets and greets,registrations and bike stories we finally departed.Riding through Victoria on a Sunday afternoon was great despite the light winds and chills.It was no doubt we were the sight as people were pulling out cameras,fingers pointing as we stroll about 100 plus deep.There were pitstops along the way to stop and nominate best dressed,best teacup,tweediest bike and best socks.After a stop for tea and cucumber sandwiches we got back on the road and headed to the final stop Penny Farthing Pub for an afternoon of drinks,laughs,awards (i won best tea cup)a snack or two and of course good byes.Had a great time up here and there's plenty to do.Oh get this,Simon who is the creator/organizer for the Victoria Tweed ride is also a foodie! He's the owner and chef of Red Fish/Blue Fish which is one of the top eateries in Victoria serving up some of the best seafood out of a shipping container! So to all who haven't been or havent had the chance to be apart of a great event, there's still time.Seattle will be hosting their second annual tweed ride Sunday June 5th meeting at Denny Park at 11am.So hopefully i'll see you there,CHEERS!

Wassup everybody!It's been awhile.I've been soo consumed with school and work and teaching i haven't had anytime to blog.But i want to let you guys and gals know that i only blog when i'm traveling,especially abroad because there's a lot going on with what i enjoy.So finally i have 4 days left of culinary school which i'm proud to say i did it!Made through nine months of ups and downs,early wake up calls,cooking creativity,and washing school uniforms!In the end i had a great time and now it's time to move on.So you all know i love bikes,iv'e been riding them since i was a kid but without a car since 97 and still loving it!I participated in the 2nd annual London Tweed last year and it was a blast!Hundreds of dapper cyclists,sweet pristine bikes and lots of tweed!Well i tried to go this year,but it was too expensive to go there for only four days.I had to be in another tweed ride but didn't no where because i had already missed Portland,New York,D.C. and a few others.But i found out through a website that keeps track of all the rides and Victoria B.C. is hosting one which is perfect because of being close to home.So i got everything together,a cool 1972 Sears Tote folding bicycle, and a new outfit consisting of a fedora,a Harris Tweed coat,plus fours,hankerchief courtesy of London Tweed Run,suspenders,tweed tie and a nice pair of shoes.Everything had a nice mix and went well together.Bought a ticket taking the Victoria Clipper for the first time and headed out friday afternoon.The weather has been going back and fourth,rain no rain,rain and so fourth and so on.Finally the head organizer decide on making Sunday the date and i'm praying as well as the rest of the riders for a clear day to enjoy!So talk to you all tommorow with video and and pics.CHEERS!

A rapper once said that.Wassup everybody!i hope all is well and we're being blessed with positive energy!Yeah it's been awhile .When i got back i didn't feel like doing anything.Just goto school and camp i my room all day.The transition was hard for awhile.But im back in business!I have alot to catch with you all!Have to finish the rest of the trip and culinary school.Yeah CULINARY SCHOOL! When i was in London,i went to Tokyo Fixed Gear Shop in SoHo and purchased some velcro straps to try them out.While spending time with my girl here in Germany there is a German company called Aurora that make velcro straps.Available in 6 colors,these are made here in Germany,can be used with cages/clips and cost 25 euros or 30 euros shipped outside Europe.Here is the link for those who want to order a pair. Cycling in a library?

You know sometimes when you say to yourself "I thought i've seen it all till..."Well with bikes i've seen some outrageous builds,races,art etc.Until i heard about this a while back.How about a mini velodrome in a library.That'a right,a mini velodrome called Circuluslocated in the Seeley G. Mudd Science Library at Pomona College in Claremont,CA.With 45 degree banks,this perfect round drome was bulit as an experiment and as a way to use an abandoned building that had no use.Average time per rotation: 5 seconds.

An American diner in Germany.......

One afternoon while we were having dinner with my girl's parents,she was talking about this place where they make really good ribs.She says every time she thinks of that place, it makes her mouth water.So i'm like,bbq in Germany?It's a diner that's about an hour and a half drive from their house.I'm game,so when do we go?So last night,my girl called up a couple of her friends,hopped in the van and headed to a small town called Oyten.Mind you my girl and her family live in a city/farm town and once you leave there,it's mostly farm land.Once we reach Bremen we pull off the exit and "Daisy's Diner" is sitting right off the freeway,excuse me autobahn.We pull in to the driveway and it's a pure diner.Afew old classics are parked out front,an black on black mint condition 1970-71 Buick Riviera,an old 40's panel wagon,and a few others,with diners standing outside smoking cigs and talkin cars.We step inside and it feels like a 50's old diner with tunes form the fifties playin,different metal signs adorn the walls such as,Indian,Green River Soda,old Coca Cola signs and more.What's was interesting was the menu.Even thought it was in German,it was completely in english too!Remember we are in a small town in Germany,never thought we would find an american themed 50's diner here!But according to my buddy Jake, there were american bases within 15 miles of here.Everything you could think of is on the menu.Hamburgers,crispy curly fries,giant malt shakes,and of course ribs!Hot dogs,potato wedges,steaks and i mean large steaks!Rib eyes,porterhouse,filet 10/12/14 ounces.Then there are the ribs!Sunday is rib day.There were 5 choices:the Jack "Daniel's" ,Tennessee,Homemade old fashion bbq,Sweet Apple,and The Hot.Your choice of spareribs or beef.We went with Jack Daniels, two apple,and two homemade.Plus with a couple order of fries and a baked potato meal for my girl.While waiting for our food,the drinks come,being nosy on other tables seeing what people are ordering.The plates are big!Be very hungry when you come here.One thing was cool,was the Seattle Seahawks pennant on the wall!SEATTLE REPRESENT!Our food arrives and the plates are big!Basically for 10 euros you get a slab and a half with a tomato cucumber tickle of two slices,two slices of garlic bread, napkins, toothpicks and we dig in.There was one hiccup,only four tiny wet naps came to the table!Sorry you get knocked one point for that!Besides that, the meal was filling.The ribs weren't bad,i like my ribs to fall off the bone but these were pretty good.More than plenty bbq sauce dressed the ribs,the baked potato came with a side of blue cheese dressing,but the salad was a nutty combo,Corn,lettuce,kidney beans,tomatoes,bell peppers and thousand island dressing.Once dinner was done,and a few minutes to relax a bit they ordered ice cream which is the small Ben and Jerry's ice cream with 5 choices.After it was said and done this was a really good meal Now we have a hour half ride back home!

So on my last night with my new friends we decided to hangout around town. While we were out late,we found a bar called "Las Cuevas" which is a "sangria bar" only.Headed downstairs and the place is practically full from with bar slogans along the wall and old saloon style piano being played by an ole fellow that works there,and locals,tourists,having a joyous time.For 10 euros you can get a pitcher which is good for 6 and don't be surprised you get another.This is a great place to go for just a mellow night with friends or if you are in the mood bar hop.This concept would be great back in my hometown,i might have to chat wiith a couple buddies to see if they're interested!From the different plazas,which is a local meeting point,hangout,to the numerous cafes,eateries,bars,clubs,great architecture,etc. there is plenty to do here and it's quite a clean city as well.I know quite alot of people already have been here but for those who haven't,make sure you do come.Hostels are fairly priced for the budget traveller and there's something for everyone.Le gusta ciudad o Madrid!Andre and all the new friend s i made and met i'll see you all next summer with better speaking spanish i promise!

I started riding a fixed gear about two years ago.I don't get to ride as much as alot of my other buddies but when i do i love riding.I don't do the tricks like my friends but i ride for the joy of riding and the exercise.Even though Madrid is a car forward city there's still people riding,fixed gear,road bikes,basket bikes etc.So one afternoon when i was on my way back my buddy's place, i came upon this fixed gear shop called "Black Track".No bigger than a maybe three closets put together, this shops carries brands like Cinelli,Velocity,Phil Woodhubs, Aerospoke, Nitto,Vittoria and more.Shipping and ordering is also available.So make sure you stop by this shop to say wassup and to also find out about bike events,hangouts,get togethers etc.

The one thing i love to do is eat.I'll try just about anything,not because it's a dare,or i'm crazy,it's because i cook.And cooking for me and many of my culinary bredrens means there's always something new to try.Being in Spain the food has been great,good,and cheap.In Madrid,most places have tapas which are small portions of different varieties of food served in most places for free with the purchase of beer.With beer prices between 1-2 euros it's makes eating a lovely experience depending where you go.What i recommend is just have an open mind and go into a place that looks inviting,busy,or ask a local.Me and my buddy Andre checked out a few places serving choices like, sliced baguette with cheese and "Salchicha" (chorizo),"Tortilla de patata"(potato omelette),light battered calamari,olives,stuffed bell peppers with fish topped with cheese,Morcilla(blood sausage),"Gambas" (shrimps),and more as they change with each purchase of a beer.And with the world cup going on, everyplace is packed. Slices of "Jamon" (ham),"Revuelto" which means stirred is fried eggs with bacon,and potatoes mixed together.These choice are quite typical in Madrid and can be found in one of the few plazas such as Plaza de Mayor,Plaza Santa Ana,or Museo de Jamon.So you can definitely eat and drink on a budget in Madrid no excuses!

The art in Madrid was soo cool!So many varieties,from stencils,pastes,graf,political,you name it was there.One thing i noticed on this whole trip is that in europe most shops have the sliding down garage door.This gives any artist a chance to showcase it's talents.I got more pics of art either early in the morning or after at night when most places were closed.It's something about street art which is not a bother to the people or the government or it's the least of their problem.As where here in the US it's an eyesore or wasting they're time about arresting and placing someone in jail.Yeah i know there are crossing the line which i can understand,but the reason for art is self expression,for some who need this and don't have no other outlet.

Madrid.....

So finally after all the drama of getting to Madrid i finally made it.Getting off the bus the station is packed and i gotta call my homie Andre to link up with him.After a quick phone call and directions i hop on the easy very straightforward subway and im at his place in 30 minutes.The neighborhood he lives in is an artsy place with a little bit of everything,tattoo shops,thrift stores,a couple art galleries,little bars,restaurants,cafes,with a little plaza that's a meeting place/neighborhood hangout/kid playground.Since it was a long day i stayed in the first night,and made plans for the next day.So while my buddy Andre and his girl are at work i set out and check the city on my own.Just like any city,busy streets,department stores,alot more cars here than Madrid and of course tourists.But one thing i thought was interesting was the "Jamon" shops/cafes.They were all adorned with prosciutto legs throughout the whole cafe!There was one place i passed by called "Jamon de Museo", it looked like a wax museum of prosciutto legs,but of course the real reason was the choices of sandwiches you can get for 3 euros and under.Next from there i found a plaza called "Plaza de Espana"where there was a museum called "Templo de Debod".This was this ancient egyptian temple rebuilt holding artifacts from Egyptian history such as "Isis" and "Osiris" also they had a miniature scale version of a famous Pharoah's lodgings.For free it was well worth it,also behind it outside is a beautiful view of Madrid.From there i walked around the city checking the architecture such as the "Almudena Cathedral",the "Royal Palace" and courtyards.From there i headed back to my buddy's neighborhood walked around tried a few different snacks of course.I wonder what we're gonna eat tonight?

The city of Porto........

I was only in Porto for seven days,but it was a well spent seven days.From the tile all over the city,the street art,the very efficient light rail system,the port wineries,the pleasant locals,and of course the food.The beach which i didn't get a chance to hang out at was beautiful,the architecture,cobblestone streets,Sao Jao Festival,all of it was great!Not a hectic,overpacked,tourist infested city like Lisbon but a bit more laid back,scenic and beautiful.Now Ryan Air flies there with more connecting flights to,Madrid,Granada,Barcelona and more in the next few months will make this city alot more interesting to see besides there big brother city Lisbon.By far the prettiest city on my trip.I mean i did love the beach like city of Bari,but beach cities pretty much have the vibe you'll expect.It's nice to come to a city and be able to relax without the hustle and bustle of packed streets,unclean air etc.All i'm saying is come to Porto before you goto Lisbon i guarantee you'll have a blast especially if you're here for the festival!

So after saying my goodbyes to Rafael and his family.Clara's father gives me a ride to the train station,i board my train and i'm on my way.Aboard the train i sent and think about the last couple months,where i've been,all the long bus rides,train rides,and wondering whats next.As the time flies by we finally reach the last stop and it's 1105pm with 30 minutes till my next connection.I get off and realized im in Lisbon!.Now according to the ticket guy he told me what time i would arrive and that i would have a 15-20 minutes till my next train to Madrid.So of course i did not look at the train stops and now i'm stuck in Lisbon for one night!NOT COOL!NOT COOL AT ALL!Now i have to find a hotel for the night and buy a new ticket.70 euros wasted!So i get some directions where to go in town to find a hotel which meant a 30 minute subway ride,then the hotels i find are all high end places and its after midnight,so i check in the first place right upstairs from the station.77 euros for the room.The next mornig i get back to the station and they tell me there isn't an available train till 1030 at night and on top of that i can't get a refund on my ticket unless i send the ticket back to my buddy's place in Porto where he can get the refund of 30 euros but it would take atleast a month to get it back!Now i'm more pissed!But he tells me to goto the bus station and see if theres a bus to Madrid.I get there and there's one bus available for 40 euros and it's 8 hours!No choice but i do it and im off.Almost 200 euros within 24hours spent all because i didn't check the stops.Number one rule when riding the train abroad:READ THE STOPS !IF YOU DON'T KNOW ASK A PASSENGER!

Art in Porto......

Well you already know i love art no matter what form.But one thing Europe has alot more of than the US is graffiti and street art in general.The styles varied in Porto from traditional graf, to stencils with a political or comical image,to pasting of unusual figures.The are here was amazing,too bad i didn't get a chance to meet any artist while i was there.I spent a whole day walking around the city taking pics.Hopefully on my next visit i'll get a chance to meet of few artists.

Two days in the country..........

So the day after the the Sao Jaon Festival,the family decides to head out to the country for a couple days.Leaving concrete,large buildings,abundance of cars,trucks,buses, etc.The kids in the back seat just sleeping,yappin away as Rafael and his wife and i talk about the plans for the next two days.It's a beautiful day with clear blue skies a bit of a breeze as the scenery changes to miles upon miles of grape vines,wineries,olive trees and hills of trees.The further we drive the less cars become passing through Sandeman and other port companies.With about 20 or so minutes left before we reach our destination we come upon the last town which has one gas station a few stores a church all on one strip then we are back with the countryside again.Finally we reach a town called "Pereiros" population a couple hundred maybe with olive trees,farmland,trees produced to make cork,tractors old stonemade homes,farm animals in every other person yard.We pass a local hangout where a few are drinking and laughing as we approach the house.A few minutes later another family arrives as we introduce each and get settled in.The house is beautiful,with a small garden on the very top with various herbs a couple fruit trees,while inside the house woods floors,a brick oven,antique kitchen equipment along with family history pics etc. adorn the walls.After a light dinner and the rest of the families show up we nod off to bed preparing for tomorrow. First stop of the day is a trip to a local wine making company getting a tour of the property,the type of grapes they are producing,the explaining of how wine and port is made to even how the labels are placed on the bottle.From there we moved on to having lunch at a local favorite place called "Cafe Restaurante Cantiflas" to enjoy some great food while watching Portugal in the World Cup.The first dish was a beef dish that marinated in just garlic olive oil and some herbs which was cooked to med rare with potatoes.Dam that was good!A pork dish was prepared with fried potatoes,rice,while the pork was smothered in ratatouille of some sorts which was good also.With a salad consisting of grilled green bell peppers,onions,tomatoes and lettuce,and of course wine with a Portugal win made for a great afternoon.Next we headed for a hike to see a beautiful view of Pereiros and the grapevines covering most of the land.After that hike and a bit of rest it's time for dinner.We head just a 2 minute walk to a house with a sign above the door saying "Ernestus" Cozinna Regional.This is the local favorite place to eat with pure Portuguese cuisine being prepared by Chef Lidia Sobral. As we step inside, the far wall is made of stone with a shelf clay baking dishes as well as a few products she makes such as the tomato jam which i later purchased.The place isn't that big,with a long table set for about 20,a table with a scale and register and her husband and i do believe their son as our hosts/waiters for the evening.I'm not exactly sure what was for dinner but it was suppose to be a surprise.But before we have dinner she gives us a tour of her kitchen.A small operation with one stainless steel table ,a countertop and a couple other kitchen utensils needed for preparing food.Then there's the smoker.The one thing Lidia is known for, is her smoked meats.With some already smoked meat hanging to the right,head,sausages etc.Below there is a huge black pot sitting atop some coals used for cooking her masterpieces.I pretty much got the jist of what she was explaining how the smoking is done with some help from a friend when asking questions.After wine is poured,appetizers come to the table.Bread with two types of sausages.One was made with bread giving it a heartier texture and taste and the second one a darker smokier spicier one which both paired nicely with the red wine.Next up was the entree which was rooster cooked slowly in it's own blood with,spices,and rice.Now that was the bomb!The richness of the sauce was nice with the very tender rooster was very filling even though i had thirds!That's right i said rooster!Finally for dessert we had a flan/creme brulee like dish which was the size of large pie.Creamy,rich and very good.This little lady can really cook.She even offered me a chance to stay a week to teach more about her cooking!I should have taken her up on that but hopefully there will be a next time.A few pics and hugs i thank her for a fabulous meal.To Clara and her family I thank you for welcoming me in your home and seeing a part Portugal no tourist would see!ABBRIGADO!

Sao Jao Festival.......

My buddy's wife is not feeling well so his kids and i decide to head out to meet up with a few other friends for the festivities.Up a few floors of my friends place you can hear the horns throughout the city,yells,car horns,as the festival is about to begin.We hop on the train to take us into the central part of the city,it's packed to the max with people excited about tonight.Kids ages ranging from 6-7 months old to 17-18 years donned in country flag colors,the plastic hammers,giggles,conversations,positive energy throughout everyone.As we get off the train with the masses the city is alive!Nonstop sounds,packed streets,locals,tourists,are everywhere with the jumbo screen showing football games,food stalls showcasing simple local eats,sweets from cotton candy,chocolates,fruit,whistles blaring,as we meet up with our friends and slowly and i mean slowly walk toward the water to enjoy some of the festivities such as live music,light show etc.We finally get to the water and it is packed,too packed you can't get through.We're talking Mardi Gras,Carnival,all wrapped up in one on one night!1 euro beers,2-4 euro eats,TV celebrities hosting the early night events with a cool breeze blending in with warm air.Finally after getting a good place to view the fireworks show,we chat it up for a while police are nowhere in sight and its an all night party.Midnight arrives and the river becomes pitch black and the music begins.Fireworks up and down the river from boats placed,lasts for a half hour.The show was alot of fun as people begin to head down to another part of town to celebrate more till 8am!The kids are tired i'm tired so we call it a night about 1am,so now we have to make it back to the house!After a hour and a half we get back and fall asleep.In the end you should come to Porto to enjoy a couple days of partying!

Countdown to the festival

The jumbo screen showing the cup is setup in the middle of city.Stalls selling festival gifts such horns,toy hammers which are the tradition which replaced the giant garlic flowers but those are still available.As each hour passes more and more people are heading into town,heading to the river for the live music,firework show and more.Now i know most of you have been to mardi gras or some type of event like that.Well imagine mardi gras time 3 in one night!Well that's what happened!Streets are packed with people hitting each other with hammers or getting tapped in the head with garlic celebrating having a great time,various foods being sold like bifahnas which is pork slow cooked in a tomato based sauce shredded and served on a bun,sangria,beers,churros,burgers,you name it was there!Every alley, side street,car,subway was packed with joyous people,from elderly folk to little tikes only 3 and 4 months old!The party really gets going after the firework show at midnight which is 30 minutes of light fun.During the show live music is played with the party moving down 6-7 miles to another part of town till 8-9am!I was with Rafael and the two kids and two other families,so when the fireworks were done we headed out.I'm not a big partier but you should come check this festival,you will have alotto talk about!

Sandeman Port Wine tour.........

We decide to goto the other side and see the port companies and decide on checking out Sandemans. What was cool about this place is all the port companies sitting next to each other, offering tours for a small fare but most are free.You can do as many as want if your stomach can handle it.Tables are setup at just about everyone with people sitting outside enjoying sun the scene of the river sipping on a glass of good port.We step inside with a museum of old port bottles to the left and on the right an actual museum on the history of the brand showcasing old tools,labels,bottles etc.After a a little wait,we begin the tour with a woman dressed in the cape and hat like the logo as we begin to enter the first room.This was my first time doing a wine tour so i was intrigued.The first room was amazing,large french oak barrels with different dates on each one as our guide describes the history and process.As we walk through there is a cage with old ports dating back to 1904!I can imagine what that tastes like!At the end of the 20-25 minute tour which also featured a short film about the company,you get to sit a table and enjoy two of their flavors.Both had a distinct taste of their,the white one was a bit strong but the red would go perfect with a creme brulee. But before you leave check out the gift shop and pick up a bottle or something to take back with you to remember the great time you had cuz i did!

First day in Porto......

So after a few hours of sleeping,i wake up so does Rafael,he decides that we should see a bit of Porto.So we head down to the river to take in the view of all the old boats that were once used for shipping port back and forth,to the port brands setup,from Sandeman,Graham's, etc.We find a place and of course he orders Bacalao which was the first i said wanted to try!So we ordered bacalao,grilled sardines,and soup.Yeah in the middle of summer having soup!But it's a common staple here for lunch and dinner especially for the kids.They are mostly a potato based soup with vegetables consisting of,cabbage,green beans,carrots,rutabaga etc.The bacalao was really good!The salted cod went perfectly with the sliced onions and boiled eggs.The sardines were pretty good but Rafael says he knows a better place for them.Grilled whole with a bit of lemon the flesh comes right off the bone and the soup was good,but what made the meal was seeing their 2 year old son Andre eat that soup like it was his favorite meal!Seeing kids eat vegetables is great besides the typical corn and carrots.After the meal we decided to check out some more of the city,churches,old architecture,which was really cool.The city is not like a Rome or Palermo or it's big brother city Lisbon,but seems to have a pace of it's own,which is what i like.Tour buses,tourists and locals flood the area as the city prepares itself for the St. John's street festival on wednesday.Stages,food stalls are being built all over the city while the decoration give the city a vibrant color.Definitely looking forward to tomorrow!

The view from the plane of Porto is gorgeous!Blue waters,green lands of the countryside to the port side of this city.We land with Clara, my friend (Rafael) wife is standing there with a white board showing the letter T.After a brief introduction we head to the house and discuss plans for the night.I'm up for anything but deep down i want to sleep.Mind you Rafael just got in a day or so ago and he's tired too.So after meeting Clara's parents to sleep i go, night night!After a few hours of sleeping we decide to take the family and see the city.While walking they both talk about history,growing up in Porto and how much they love their city.Now compared to the hustle and bustle of Naples and Rome,Porto is more my speed.Not as hectic and tourist packed like the previous cities i've been to.Plus the old architecture is great too see along with the new and modern buildings popping up here and there to the view of the famous port wine companies setting across the river make this place a must to visit.So what's for dinner?

As i'm taking the train to Milan to fly out to Porto,i sit an view the endless acres of lush green and i think about how beautiful untouched land is.The scene by train is far more inviting than by bus,or rushing it on a plane.Town after town i pass as the time flies i finally arrive in Milan about 11:15pm.Now i know there's one more bus still available to Bergamo tonight, but i have to find it.Sure enough i find the stop and the bus already left for the night.I have to be in Bergamo by 6am.So i had no choice but to spend 80 EUROS to get there!Another lesson learned,always arrive earlier in the day to be sure you make your next destination or you might be screwed like i was.So i get to the airport about 1230am,and i see people camped out sleeping,on the internet,listening to music.Looks like i'm sleeping,but right when i want to settle and sleep, the airport security tells me that this part of the airport is closed and we have to move to the already cramped area till 430am.You think i slept,Nope!I tried didnt work,hard floor plus i was by the always opening closing doors leading to outside bringing in a cold air made it not comfy one bit.So the ipod became my best friend for the few hours before my flight.Finally the time goes by,and i check in,on board heading to Porto.

Even though my time was limited in Naples and Rome i still had a great time!This part of the trip was longest part of it covering three countries,Italy,Portugal,and Spain.I do hate the fact of having to leave my girl,but i'll make it up to her full fold.This was well needed because there were times i thought about giving up cooking and persuing a different career.But i was meant for cooking,it is in my blood,my whole family cooks and this is what i'm good at and want to to become a much better cook in the future.Italy has taught me the meaning of appreciation.Appreciation of how fruit and vegetables are to be grown,the freshness of seafood, the treating of how cows,sheep,lamb etc. should be treated and fed,to how food should tastes when it hits your tongue.The simplicity.The idea of how only a handful of ingredients pretty much being used in just about every dish can make a great, satisfying, pleasurable, intensifying meal!I can't wait to to get into school and be student of the culinary world truly,and understand the meaning food.I can't wait to walk into Pam's and smell the curries listening to Pam cook away,watching,learning, observing.I know in the beginning i had said i would plan on opening a street stand of my own,but that has changed.I feel the best thing for me is to educate and excel in my cooking,then i will know i'm ready for the next step.So for now i'll see you in Portugal and once again to everyone i met in Italy i truly thank you in every way.CIAO!

3rd and final night........

Well hanging out with Alessandro has been a huge inspiration for me and my cooking.So we figured what a better way to end my time here in Italy than by cooking a nice meal!So we begin planning,deciding how many courses,poultry or fish,etc.Finally we plan it out and have decided on a four course meal consisting of,snapper,mussels,calamari,octopus,and tuna.I have to say i haven't had this much seafood in such a long time.All through Italy the seafood has been great from the southern tip of Sicily to right here in Rome.I mean even the grocery stores here have huge choices of shellfish,various types of fish of the finest quality.After a few errands to the store we have everything we need to prepare our feast.Back at the house we setup the photo area in the kitchen put on some blues and begin chopping away.Plates were picked,table set,we first prepare the "Tartare di tonna" (tuna tartare) with two vinaigrettes,that came out very nice,next was the "Ensalata di polpo" (octopus salad),which was fresh,crunchy from the carrots and celery and a nice zing from the balsamic,third course was "Fiori di zucca intempura" (tempura fried stuffed zuchini flowers) came out perfect with a stuffing of snapper, mozzarella and a couple other ingredients with a light tempura batter was nice finish.And the last course was "Cozze in saute" (mussels sauteed in a spicy marinara) which was the perfect ending to a great dinner.He decides a my visit wouldn't be complete without a visit to his family owned farm.So the next morning we head out to the farm with miles of olive trees and lush greens painting the land.During the drive we talk food,history of his family's farm Alessandro being the 3rd generation enjoys his work and has plans for his business.We arrive and there's endless olive trees,hazelnut trees,chestnut trees etc.Right they export olive oil,hazelnuts,chestnuts,primarily.They also harvest and sell zucchini,lettuce,beans,tomatoes,fennel,eggs and the list goes on.After meeting a couple family members he gives me a tour of the farm.Chickens running freely,100% organic fruit and vegetables no pesticides.This was great for me because i've never really spent any time on a farm.They even offered me to come visit or work on there farm whenever i want.I'm going to have to take them up on that.My man Alessandro thank you for inspiring me to take my cooking to another level and looking forward to meeting up with you in Seattle for a bbq eating tour!

A night in Rome....

So after dinner,we decide to go out head to a grand opening of a museum in Rome with MTV hosting a party.We pick up his cousin and head to the location.The entrance is packed with people with music blaring people drinking, laughing, taking pics etc.I guess we arrived to late to check out the museum itself so we head back outside to enjoy vibe.One thing that was really cool was the giant skeleton lying on it's back in front it had to be atleast 50 feet long!The music is going from house to electronic,pop, hip hop with everyone having a great time.After a couple hours we head out to try another place.They decide to take me to a spot on the water with a view of lit up ancient architecture in the background with music playing and locals enjoying themselves.If you decide to come to Rome which most people do and you're in the mood for partying you'll love it here!

Alessandro was culinary student at one of the best schools in Italy,so i was looking forward to trying his food,getting ideas,getting inspired and definitely collaborate on a couple dishes before i leave.So he had in mind to do octopus,to be exact "Polpetti di saltimbucca" which is stuffed octopus which is slightly baked.The stuffing consisted of peas,pistachios,onion and a few other ingredients i can't give out.First we cleaned the octopus and twine them together to make a cavity.Once the pea puree was done,we then stuffed the cavity and place in the oven and baked for a few minutes on moderate heat.We then remove them from the oven and carefully sliced the octopus and placed on a plate drizzled with a bit of their family owned olive oil,made a pea like cracker and served.The octopus was cooked perfectly withe pistachios coming out a bit plus the crunchiness of the breadcrumbs made a nice combo of textures plus the olive oil was the final touch. Definitely French taught cuisine he learned in school which is why i'm looking forward to going to school this fall,to finally understand food the true definition,concept,history and the process of food.I hope you enjoyed my photos cuz i enjoyed the food.Dam tomorrow night will for sure be good!

P.S. I totally forgot the slow baked snapper withe pea consume. That was the really good also!

1st night meal actually.......

I mixed the days up,the octopus dish was the second night this is what we cooked the actual first night.So my buddy Alessandro and i talk food for a couple hours,concepts,simplicity,school,kitchen etc.He decides to do fondue with a really good parmesan and the second course,bacon wrapped meatballs.After a trip to the local butcher for some ground beef and bacon,then to the local market for bread and some parmesan,we head back to the house and begin to prep.Blues playing in the background as we mix the ground beef with grated parmesan,the mystery meat which i will tell you in the video version when i do the recipe along with a few other ingredients.Adding the sage leave then wrapped it in the bacon,tooth picked them, heated a saute pan with a bit of olive oil and a bit of butter.Next placed them in one at a time and began cooking them by crisping the bacon and searing the meatball itself to seal in the juices.Next added the white wine a bit of butter and began making the sauce.With the flavor from the meatballs,the wine and butter will make a nice sauce.While the fondue is coming together the sauce is reducing tasting well but needs salt.I add a bit of salt and let it continue to reduce.We begin putting the plate together,placing the meatballs on the the plate ,three on each plate,then taste the sauce before pouring it over.DAM! TOO SALTY! So we had to scrap the sauce but,we drizzle the fondue over the top and that worked!The richness of the fondue,the savory taste of the sage and flavor combination of the meatballs with the bacon came out to be a great dish in the end!Trial and error.That's the beauty of cooking,always trial and error.It turned out to be a nice meal,sorry i don't have any pics right now but will do once i figure out the importing problem.But it was good!

Arriving in Rome....

My time in Napoli was short but i had a great time and it was time to move on and check out and to visit my new chef friend Alessandro for some eating,cooking Italian style.I arrive at the station and like any train station it's packed with locals and of course plenty of tourists especially from the U.S. I get directions and hop on the very efficient subway system.Oh one thing don't try to be slick and not pay the fare or you'll pay a nice hefty fine.I do believe it's 35 euros,so pay the 1.10 and keep it moving. Along the way i see the graffiti adorned walls and train cars,it's warm ,very warm to be exact,looking forward to cooking tomorrow.I arrive at the stop with my friend waiting.We hop in the car and head to his place.The ride to his place was beautiful.Living outside Rome,about 30 minutes away the scenery,the speed is alot slower.Tall trees,olive trees everywhere,more scooters and less cars which is fine by me.We approach his place and his neighborhood is all well kept home built in the seventies.Hmm i wonder what he has in mind to eat tomorrow?

The street art in Italy is really cool.Especially in here in Napoli. Graffiti,political art,stencils,paintings,taggers,you name it.And it's everywhere!It doesn't matter,if there's a empty its blasted.It's obvious that the local government is not paying any mind to it,because it's considered a minor issue compared to other things.But the work is amazing by the artists here,yeah there's a lot of graffiti, but the other types of art work that dominates the walls.so should just spend a day to walk around the city to see it,definitely well worth the day,plus it gives you a chance to try a lot of interesting food along the way!

So i'm a bit behind,but in the next two days i will catch up.So my 2nd and last day in Napoli (Naples),i decided to go see Pompeii with a couple friends i met in Bari.We take a bus and after a bit of a drive we arrive.Here's a tip,If you bring your passport,college i.d. you can get a discount to get in,but not a copy your actual passport.We paid 11 euros for entry and 6 for the bus ride. If any of you don't know,Pompeii is a partially buried Roman city in the region of Campania.This city was buried by a two day eruption from Mount Vesuvius burying the city atleast 5 meters.Rediscovered in the late 1500's by accident,till this day there constant excavation of the city showing how the people lived, worked,entertained etc.For me this was a history lesson that i never paid attention to in school but seeing it with my own eyes was amazing.From the way the water was distributed through the city,the craftmanship,the architecture etc.This city is huge so don't expect to see it aand be done in a couple hours.We were there 5 hours for the whole thing!Don't worry if you are tired there is a cafeteria serving subpar overpriced food,or what i would reccomend is to bring your own food take a break and sit amongst the history still standing surrounding you.This was a fun well worth day,and you must come here to see it for yourself!

Antica Pizzeria da Michele.This family owned business is 140 years old making the best pizza in Naples with a line everyday of locals,tourists,foodies,waiting for a hot slice.With only two kinds,the "Normal",marinara,oregano,olive oil or the "Margherita" which is fresh mozzarella,basil and marinara.Baked in a wood oven operated by one man,these pizzas are flying two,three,and four at a time.Their isn't a policy on the wall but people here eat and go,to let others get a chance to dive into 4.50 euro pizza.The team consists of one making the pizzas,one placing them in the oven,one cooking them,and three servers sporting all white with a tight system.Pictures adorn the walls of family members,famous celebrities like Julia Roberts and so on.Basically when you arrive, take a number and wait.Matthew,Patrina and I waited for about twenty,but we went across the street to "Mexico" a cafe/bar and ordered drinks while we waited listening to the sounds of hectic Napoli traffic and humid weather.Our number was called, we sat ordered something to drink placed our order.While we waited i watch the pizza maker go to work,fluid with his hands the pizzas are made with ease.After a chat and some laughs with the crew our pizzas come.A nice char on the thin crust,the smell of the toppings perfume the dining area.We all cut ourselves a slice and dig in.The marinara has slight sweetness to it from the great tomatoes that grow here in this beautiful country.With the combination of the other ingredients make this heaven in the mouth.Have your napkins ready because the sauce easily end up on your lap,but thats a good stain lol!Some choose to eat it in slices,some fold it twice and eat it the Napoli way like a sandwich. That was great meal for the first thing to eat here in Naples,it is required that you come here!

Well that's right only two days in Naples.So i'm gonna have to cover as much ground as possible.Plenty of food to eat and a few sights.Matthew and Patrina decide they want to go and see the busiest city in all of Italy for a day.After a 3 hour drive we arrive in Naples with packed streets,cars,vendors selling bootleg name brand bags,belts,purses,wallets,and tons of scooters!We drive along the harbor till we get to the hostel i'm staying at,check in and hit streets.We get info on where to eat and head there first.Da Michele for his famous pizza.During the chaotic traffic there is also construction on the streets as they are building a subway system which makes traffic even worse,but i'm not here for traffic i'm here for food.

The one thing Bari is well known for is it's seafood.The many choices of fish,shrimp,octopus,squid,crab you name it,you can get it.And the choices are practically endless in how you want it prepared,grill,baked,sometimes fried,etc.Be it a fine dining restaurant a small mom and pop eatery,someones house,or my favorite on the street.On saturday night while out with friends and staff i met at the hostel i was staying i came upon a street stand with a grill and was curious to find out what was cooking.There was an open flame doing small sausages on metal skewers and then there was chicken skewers.But that wasn't what i was really looking at.To the left on the grill on low flame was octopus!That's right octopus being grilled over mesquite served on a bun for 3 euros.It was about a 2 pounds grilled and cut perfectly.Now if you know anything about octopus or squid on a grill if you don't grill it right it can come out chewy and rubbery making it not appetizing.It was obvious this was a family business with chairs and a couple tables of plates,mothers,wives, a couple kids running around with the brother or husband manning the grill.I order one,no salt and pepper just a squeeze of lemon juice,cuts it open a bit, places it on a toasted bun.Now i said the tuna sandwich in Trapani was the best 3 euros i've spent so far for street food well the this sandwich takes the cake!It was cooked perfectly,smokiness from the mesquite,the hint of lemon on a toasted bun made a perfect meal.Wash it down with your favorite drink while taking in the smell of the sea.So be sure to come down to the pier and look for the grilled octopus.

Jonothan and I decide to to take a trip to the famous small town Alberobelo. Known for it's truli constructions this has been a tourist attraction for quite some time. Truli is an Apulian stone dwelling with a cone like shaped roof.Mostly used as storehouses or dwellings made without mortar or cement to avoid taxation.Their thick walls provide protection from heat during the hot summers and protection from the cold harsh winters.The rooftop is made of limestone and keystone with the top layer or outer layer is made with limestone slabs to ensure the home is watertight. There's also these white symbols that are painted on the roofs,some with planetary symbols,heart,evil eye,etc.They are available to buy but you have follow the regulations by United Nation Educational Scientific Cultural Organization world heritage law.A beautiful place to see,you can take the train 6 days a week (except Sunday) takes about 40 minutes (8 euros roundtrip)or take the bus which takes two hours (6 euros).Make sure you come to Alberobelo.

It's saturday morning and i'm awoken to the sound of horns and drums.A few of us were curious so we decided to check it out.It's a parade with people adorned in religious wear,full bands playing tunes with people watching.Come to find out it was a parade celebrating the birthday of Saint San Antonio.A Portuguese catholic saint born in Lisbon,Portugal where he lived most of his life to a wealthy and later died in Padua,Italy.

With just a couple days left before i head to naples i decided to do some fishing with my buddy Antonio.I was able to get my hands on a bike,so after grabbing everything i needed we headed out on a mid afternoon quest for dinner for tonight. After a bit of a stroll we get to our spot with the Adriatic Sea right at our toes!The choice of weapon;a 5 meter pole,no reel,4 meter of line,two tiny hooks,and a sinker!These little fish are quite popular for locals,usually eaten in soup.Worms were used for bait and the games began! We catch a few after a couple hours,enough to make a nice soup, add some shrimp from Pesheria Del Centro who had beautiful choices of seafood and we head out. I let Antonio make the soup while i blog.After about an hour the soup is finished we dig in and everyone enjoys the meal which also included spaghetti with sweet cherry tomatoes, and a chicken dish made by the hostel chef Fabio.Nothing wrong with a little fishing on this trip!

I love Italy for it's markets.They are everywhere,from the large indoor markets to the tiny corners store shops selling fresh fruit and vegetables,beautiful seafood,various cuts and choices of meats.I will miss the smell of the large lemons,the soo delicious tomatoes you can eat like a snack,or how about the live octopus you can purchase,the just caught mussels with the smell of sea.Huge bundles of dried herbs,the ever sweet peaches,too many choices of pastas,oh and the tuna i will miss the tuna! Italy for me has changed the way i see food,how just simple ingredients but fresh ingredients can make great dishes.But of course you can't prepare great dishes without real olive oil!You can eat it with a spoon.drizzle it on desserts or just toosed in a sald with a hint of lemon.Dam the markets,the markets,the markets!

One thing i've noticed in each city i go,graf is everywhere and i love it!Crews,solo artists,taggers you name it.I took a ride with vito who is a retired breakdancer to show some places around town for some pics.Graf mostly known or done by guys,here we found some dope female artists.Like "This" and "Bole" had some great work.I wish i had more time to check out more places but i'll be back for sure!

So me and a couple new friends decide to go out for stroll along the harbor near Old Town but notice an unusual stand with loads of people out front.We head over and realize it's a giant lemon cut in half with two guys inside serving drinks.The place Is called Lemon Bar.Their drinks are lemon,orange or lime base,with your choice alcohol or no alcohol.Drinks choices such as (lime,banana,kiwi),(lemon,strawberry,melon),or if you are a drinker try the Lemon Classic,which is fresh squeezed lemon juice and vodka,or the Lemon Frizzante which is lemon juice and gin.Only open from 6pm to about 1am or so,the guys are always busy,music pumping out the speakers,going at their own pace.If we had something like this back home,it would be a hit!This is now my favorite street stand on my culinary trip.The guys are cool,fresh fruit,great concept,and located right by the beach.I'm quite surprised they are not open during the day because they would make a killing on these hot Italian summers!With drinks costing no more than 3 euros i went five days in a row!So make sure you top in Bari by the beach for Lemon Bar for a cool drink.

Today i thought i would take road trip to check out another city.So i hopped on a train and headed to Matera a town in the province of Basilicata. About an hour away,this town was founded by the Romans in the 3rd Century B.C. Matera which means stones of Matera is where they got their name.Especially their ancient town the Sassidi. Basically the houses were dug into the rock itself even some of the streets are located on top of rooftops of houses! As for sights there's the Matera Cathedral,Castle Tramottamo as well as the the deep cavern that has a stream at the bottom also there is caves to see of different sizes.This was a well worth visit for only 8 euro round trip plus scenery on the way there was beautiful acres upon acres of olive trees. Oh yeah as for food plenty of little spots to eat but i just has some really good gelato.Don't forget about the siesta time where things are closed between 1-5.I recommend to just pack a lunch come see the sights and head back.You can catch a train at the Bari Terminal as early as 8am and and as late going back from Matera 8pm.Definitely come see this beautiful place,you will surely enjoy it!

So i decided to go out with a couple of the staff and some new friends i made to Old Town.The one thing i noticed,this city is alive at night seven days a week.Lots of people,food,scooters,drinking,etc.So Saturday we went to to hang out and one other thing i noticed,the gelaterias.They are more packed at night than in the day!You think it was a bar,but nope they love their Gelato ranging fro Sutto Busco (strawberry)Pesca (Peach)which are my favorite or flavors like real vanilla,sesame with chocolate,pistachio,or pina colada!There's crepes selling for 3 euros from street stands,kebabs,panninis,and of course pizza.Real pizza.Thin crust,a couple ingredients,pomodoro (tomatoes),basil,mozzarella,free art gallery to view some great work local or famous artists.Then head down by the water and grab a drink to cool down from the 70 degree night,or even a nice snack from someone grilling and have a seat overlooking the Adriatic Sea listening to some music from a nearby bar.This is a fun happening city,very alive seven days with more than plenty to do,so when you plan your Italy trip definitely come to Bari,Puglia!I'll be back for sure!Ciao!

After a bit of drama with getting to Bari,i get settled into my place and set out to the city tomorrow.The city is busy.Locals sipping on espresso,scooters zooming down streets,vendors selling everything you can think of from your typical Italian flags,football jerseys,to fake Gucci,Chanel,Louis Vutton bags,belts you name it.Then there's the beach,the view of the Adriatic Sea, the random fishermen selling their catch of the day,to the always packed gelato shops.There's plenty to do in Bari,with the Old Town that sits right on the water is just a few blocks away from where i'm staying.There's the beautiful architecture of the Basila Di San Nicola Church,plenty of little eateries serving up hot treats like Arancini which are deep fried risotto balls,pizza of course,fresh bread,or if you are in the shopping mood there's a few salumerias offering various choices of olive oils,meats,cheeses,you name it.There's also restaurants which open around 5pm serving some great seafood as well some of your favorite pasta dishes.What also makes Old Town cool is the tiny and narrow streets without having a clue what could be around the corner,then there's the smell of cooking going on,people hanging laundry out to dry or one of my favorite sights,two elderly women sitting side by side peeling artichokes while laughing and chatting it up.The place is quite clean rather quiet during the day but a whole different beast at night.Once you leave Old Town you can head further down and run right in to the harbor where you can catch the ferry to Croatia,Greece,Albania for quite a cheap price,i believe 20 euros for Croatia.Head in the opposite direction more towards the street you can find an indoor farmers market selling beautiful fresh fruit and vegetables even and stand selling various meats and cheeses.Walk outside to the right you will find a art gallery,and on the other side there's a little harbor where you will find a fish market and also a great view of Bari which i recommend seeing and taking pics of at night!Their beach is not all that big but there's plenty of clear cool water to tread out atleast 200 meters! The white sand area can be quite crowded on the weekend so come early get your spot and relax and take the scenic sea view in!There's a place to order drinks,as well some room to play a bit of football if you're in the mood.Once you leave the sandy area it becomes rocky which is not bad but there's plenty of grass to to sit on ,but i prefer the sand.And that's only the day time!

12 hours in Palermo........

Well the couple i met take to the hostel they're staying and i get a room with a beautiful view over the roof tops of the city.We drop our bags in our rooms and head out.This being the biggest in southern Italy, is constantly busy, every other person on a scooter plenty of places to eat,and alot of sights to see,especially churches.Walking around you find a part of town for you shopper out there with your typical brands.The one thing i love about italy is the small streets,alleys with little shops to eat, salumerias,bakeries.After a brief stroll we find a street stand serving shaved ice drinks top with various choice of syrups,i chose mint.Just like the old days crushed ice with a flavored syrup,refreshing!We venture on to look for something to eat we find this alley with all these restaurants preparing to open with plates upon plates of various antipasto,olives,eggplant,roasted red peppers.Mussels tossed in lemon and black pepper was my choice,penne con gorgonzola was her choice and a pizza with salume he orders.all the food was fantastic but the pasta could've used a bit more gorg. We pay and move on to venture thru the city finding little street with markets selling fresh fruit,meats, cheeses,spices,and of course food!We find a stand selling a mystery meat sandwich.We had to try it,he place a couple good spoons of meat on a bun with a squeeze of lemon and thats it.I think it was liver,kidneys and all sorts of unhealthy goodness.Moving on we find lots of old architecture and then come upon this restaurant that does not pay money to the mafia!Yes in order for you to operate your own business you must pay a monthly to the you know who according to what a local told us.Not sure how this restaurant got away with it but that will be another story.It's rated as one of the top fine dining restaurants in all of Palermo. Antica Focacceria S Francesco is the name.I'm on a budget but i will make sure to come back here again and eat.As the evening darkens, the city becomes more alive more and more venues are opening,bars,pubs,clubs,begin to open as people flood the streets.Everywhere bar or pub we pass they are full with people drinking beer preferably a Scottish ale called "Tennants",then there's Peroni,Desperado,Corona,Heineken and other local beers.We check out a few more spots a couple clubs 3am arrives and we head back.This was a fun12 hours,i truly recommend coming to Palermo for having a good time!

So it's Saturday morning and i book my reservation for my hostel in Bari,and after a an issue at the airport I end up having to take a bus to Palermo and from there take a train to Bari. Finally on the road with a packed bus and the view is great.Endless acres of farmland,grapevines,olive trees,beautiful hills and of course along the coast the beaches are beautiful with people tanning,playing or fishing for tuna or whatever they can catch.Passing town after town we arrive in Palermo.Compare to being to be in a beach city to a it's alot busier,high skyscraper like apartments,pedestrians,cabs,cars,buses,street vendors flood the streets.We pass the humongous football stadium as well as their velodrome,city centre,and finally the very very packed central station where buses,taxis,cars,pedestrians all share this encircled area.I go inside to and purchase my ticket and of course there's nothing available so i have to wait for the next train tomorrow morning not getting to Bari till 930 pm.I lose two days of lodging and i have to get a room for the night,but i at least get to spend a day in Palermo :)

Trapani........

Even though i was only here for three days it was a fun three!Met some really cool people, had some great food,and enjoyed the great sites this city has to offer.So be sure to make Trapani one of your first stops in Sicily.From the beautiful Egadi Islands,or the serene area of Erice.or even hanging at the beach in town.There's plenty of markets for fresh fruit and vegetables,plenty of fish markets and butcher shops,and if you're a shopper plenty of retail shops to take there of that.But one rule you must do when you come here is at the end of the day have a cup of coffee with one of their very tasty pastries or a small bowl of gelato.Definitely will be coming back here for more sightseeing and of course eating!

Cala Azzura

Back on my bike i head to the Cala Azzura Caves.I reach the caves,the rock formations caused by the water created these deep pockets or rock pools along the shore allowing you to walk down and have a picnic,get a tan,and take it all in.The further you ride around the more interesting and beautiful the formations are.So if you do decide to come to Sicily make sure you check these caves.

So after that brief morning venture to the fish markets i decide on going to the island Favigiana. For 8 euros you take a a ferry ride courtesy of Ustica Tours which is about a 20-25 minute ride with a nice view of a couple islands as well.Soon as i arrive i pick up a bicycle to rent for 2 euros for the day to see the island.With no true agenda in mind i just ride for a while till i decide on going to this fortress (which i found out what it was later) setting atop of a mountain at least a mile up maybe more.I bike halfway,lock the bike up and have to walk the rest of the way because of no bike access.The view halfway is beautiful,you can see the edge of the side of the island on this side.Finally i get to the top and the view is so serene!You can see the whole island as well as the island of Maurittimo and a few others.I go inside with images of crumbled rock,rusty nails,old electrical equipment from the fifties,love messages etched in the walls from kids making the trek.I take a few pictures chill for a bit and head back down.1843 steps to the bottom!As i head into town i grab a bottled water from a local woman who runs a little shop on the beach near the city center and she speaks some english.She recommends i go see the Cala Azzura Caves,which by bike is only 20 minutes or so away.

Mid May thru June is prime tuna season,so you can get the best tuna in in various ways.grilled,as a sandwich,or the Trapanese favorite with cous cous.So today i wake a lot earlier and walk down to the docks to see the catch and to also check out the market.The market is loaded with cigarette smoking vendors selling beautiful seafood from various prawns, octopus, anchovies, various types of fish,and of course tuna.You can get it n any way you like whole,fillet,steak cut they do it right in front of you like how most of the markets here do it,with more fish coming in within the hour.This was great site to see too bad i didn't take any pictures but atleast i saw it for my own eyes!

So i wake up about 9 am grab a pastry and some fresh orange juice and i'm out the door.First stop the fish markets near the port,then check out the rest of the town.After about an hour stroll i make it to the markets totally forgetting that it's fish markets and that means being there early not 11am! but i do find a couple of stands selling food,and i mean real food!I pull up to one stand and it's adorned with hanging garlic,dried octopus,prosciutto,cheeses,and herbs.A couple tables of various olives,tomatoes,canned tuna,olive oil,and olive oil cured tuna vacuum sealed in various sizes.Next to the cash register there were two small containers with paper thin like slices of fresh tuna soaking in olive oil as a sampler.I order a liter of green olives tossed in olive oil herbs and slices of red onions and a "tonna de pannino".Thin slices of fresh tuna placed on fresh baked style hoagie dressed in a bit of olive oil,sea salt and cracked black pepper then placed on a pannini press.Dam! that's the best 3 euros i've spent on my whole culinary trip so far!The olive oil itself i could eat in spoonfuls!The olives were fresh with the herbs and the sweetness of the red onions made it a nice mix ,a nice lunch.I begin to head back to my room after walking around checking the beach,and i decided what i'm going to cook for dinner,plus it's 2pm and just about everything is closed except for a few gelaterias. Siesta is where you work a portion of the day till about 1pm,then take a 3-4 hour break,sleep,relax,eat or whatever as long you're not working then reopen at 5 pm and close around 8pm.So for all you tourists out there remember this. After a little nap i head to the local market to pickup what i need for dinner.Since i'm in Trapani i should have a traditional dish."Spaghetti alla trapanese" This dish is basically their version of pesto tossed in spaghetti.Very simple yet flavorful.Fresh grated pecorino cheese,almonds,basil,tomatoes,garlic,olive oil of course,salt and black pepper.Mix all these ingredients together after you toasted the almonds and crushed to a powder in a mortar and pestle,next boil your pasta following instructions,drain tossed with the pesto top it with a bit more pecorino and there you have it! I made extra for dinner tomorrow and for the manager Mario as a suprise. Fingers crossed, i ask him if he's hungry, he says yes and begins to dig in. After a few bites i ask him how it tastes he says it's really good,even though it's a simple dish but you could screw it up by overcooking the pasta which i didn't ,but i made it for a Sicilian who says it was good.That was a great motivator for me with leftovers,now it's bedtime.

Arriving in Trapani

I'm sittin on the plane taking photos of Trapani and some of the surrounding islands. It's beautiful blue waters clear blue skies and lots of open land has me yearning to land and see what Sicily is about.After grabbing my pack i hop on a bus to take me into town.It's warm a bit humid but nice with with acres of farmland surrounding the airport.As we're coming into town scooters,mopeds small cars and pedestrians flood the streets. Small market stalls selling fresh fruit and vegetables, bakeries, butcher shops, geleterias, random retail shops pretty much covers the main area of Trapani along with old buildings acting as homes bed and breakfasts etc.I arrive at the bus station grab a taxi and arrive at the hostel.B&B Belle de Palme is the name of the place with a huge barren soccer field across the way and project style apartment buildings are pretty much on every block with a few mom and pop markets right around the corner.I check in drop my bags and see a couple preparing a meal.I asked them what they are preparing,penne with fresh cherry tomatoes,parmesan cheese arugula and parmesan cheese.Had a small conversation where they are from where they have been here in Trapani. I took some down some notes and called it a night.Looking forward to tomorrow.

Well i now have my itinerary for Italy.Now as you know Italy is broken down into provinces,then regions,then cities.I will start in the south and work my way north.So the first stop is the province of Sicily,where i will stay in in Trapani for three days,then Palermo,Raguza,and Catania.Next is Sardinia,which i haven't decided on which cities.From there i move onto Puglia to the city of Bari. Next the Lazio to the city of Rome.Last stop will be Tuscany to Milan where i fly out and off to Porto,Portugal to stay with my friends family and to check out the St. Johns Street Festival there biggest carnival/party which will be loads of fun then my culinary journey ends.I hope you all enjoyed everything so far and keep checking for new posts and new video.CIAO!

The day before my girl's birthday i had to go into town to pickup the remaining items for her present.I'm with a few friends and we head to the mall.After a while we're in the center of a department store and see these white dresses.Very detailed each of the nine dresses were,had their own look and style to them.After a few minutes we all realize they're made of paper.All paper from the curly hair on one of the mannequins to the to the shoes.Come to find out it was a contest for best made dress.The winner was picked by the most votes by the public.All made by young girls between the age of 18 and 23 had amazing talent.Sorry fellas it's the fashion side of me.Hey if it looks good i'm not going to front like it's not. Well i love tattoos.But it has to be something original and have a meaning or in someway related to you.In the last year i got three on my upper back.The lion was from Liberty Tattoo in Seattle,the three knives were done in Berlin at Flash Tattoo,shout out to Luca for the amazing work,and the mirepoix was done in Portland at Jackelope Tattoo.I have a few more in mind,haven't done a bike one yet or a seattle tatt. Plans are to have one done in Spain this summer before i go back home looking forward to that.I have some footage somewhere of my knives getting done but here is a pic of my back.

Well I know it's been awhile since i last posted,but i'm back home chillin with my girl before i head out to Italy,Spain,and Portugal.This part of the trip will take me through,southern Italian cities such as ,Palermo, Puglia, Castania, Cicily,then to meet my friend and his family in Lisbon,Portugal for a huge festival and to enjoy some great Portuguese cuisine.From there I meet my Danish friends in Barcelona for more culinary excitement and hopefully take a train ride and goto the ever famous" El Bulli" ran by world renowned Chef Adria Ferran then to Madrid.So stay tuned for another great culinary adventure especially in street food these countries have to offer. This was the coolest way to get a cup o joe,hot chocolate or a sot of espresso.Alan owner of Brewed Boy Espresso.Serves you a hot cup right out of his italian 3 wheel mini truck.Painted a concrete gray with his logo on both sides.Has by far the 2nd coolest street stand i've seen so far.With spending only 4 pounds a week on gas,he's definitely making good money.I found him today near Soho serving a cup of espresso to a customer,had to ask him where he got it.With his espresso machine setup in the back with pics surrounding it,he even has a drain bucket setup too.This guy was pure genius to do this.He said when he was in Italy no one was selling coffee out of these.Nice job my man!You've given me another idea for a food street stand!

Im a big fan Chef Jamie Oliver,not just for his food,but what he does for his community,the food dilemma we have in this world,to the concept behind Fifteen.I had to stop by to check out the place if i'm gonna be in town.With a two story restaurant tucked in old brick building sitting off a busy street,It's a very nice place.With upstairs as a trattoria an downstairs serving as a full on restaurant,dark leather,light colored walls, and a open kitchen,allowing the guests to watch as the young teens learn the ropes of working in the kitchen,prepping,and understanding the use of fresh fruit,vegetables,meat and seafood.I didn't get a chnce to eat because i was very busy with just a day left before i head out,but i got a chance to talk to the head chef about business and the whole purpose behind the concept.Using only seasonal ingredients,the menu is about to change in a few weeks preparing for the summer.Of course Jamie wasn't there because he's in the states trying to teach americans the importance of healthy eating especially to kids.Much respect to the "naked chef" for all the hard work and dedication hopefully sometime in the future i'll get a chance to meet him.

Well what can i say about London?Fun,exciting,great place to ride,plenty to see,busy,great food when you take the time to find it and new friends i met.Yeah every city has it's negative points but that doesn't mean you can't find the positive in it.I now have some new friends abroad in a place i hadn't planned on going immediately on my travel.But it worked out and i had a great time and looking forward to coming back to visit again for some more great food and other adventures i plan to endure.so to Hemedy and his staff at Vegan Routes,the Peckham Rye Staff,Chef Ben Asamani at 222,Teddy and Jacqui,Fritz,Amin and his crew,Vas,Mohammed,Bobbin Cycles Staff,Guiseppe,Nisha,Ivan,Giona,Fifi at Covet, and everyone else i forgot to name or forgot your name it was a pleasure to meet you all and hope to see you all again.Be happy,be well and be blessed!

Peckham Rye.....

I originally had a couple different bow-ties with me to choose from to wear for the Tweed Run.But after passing bye Peckham Rye i had to go in and take a look.I go in with a courteous and happy welcoming from the staff one of them is the great great great grandson of the owner and founder of Peckham Rye.I tell them my plan and i feel i want to change my outfit a bit.With a plethora of ties,bow-ties,scarves etc. made me for sure want to pick something up.Sure enough i did,a dark cherry bow-tie that worked with my dark cherry brogues matched to a tee.All i needed now was a shirt and vest.With the help of one of the staff they help pick out a shirt from Ben Sherman,And from there i was pretty much done.I have to give the guys at Peckham Rye a huge thank you for going out of their way to assist me also to be a part of a great event and to also be one of the most dappred men out there that day.Not only did they assist me but i also got a bit of tie knowledge as well as color combinations that i never would've thought of.Thanks alot gentleman and i'll see you next year.So fellas make sure that if you're shopping off Carnaby Street and need a scarf of a great tie head here because they can assist you in whatever you need.

I have to get a huge thank you to the staff at Bobbin Cycles for letting me use a nice bike for the Tweed Run this year.Everything worked out perfect to a great day of meeting new people,making new friends,and the awe gasping of lovely bikes everyone had.Bobbin Cycles which is located about a five minute walk from Angel Underground Station was not only a sponsor for the Tweed run But also they carry various bike accessories from baskets,panniers,grips,lights,bike wear,etc. With a few beautiful 3 speeds placed on the first floor in various colors atop a dark wooden floor with more downstairs and a friendly bike knowledgeable staff make this little shop a great place to come visit,when you are in town.Once again thanks alot Bobbin for helping me out in that last moment and allowing me to be a part of a great event!

That is one thing i notice so far on this journey.Fresh produce and vegetables,fresh baked bread,fresh seafood,seven days a weeks throughout different neighborhoods.Be it right in Central London,or in the suburbs like Osnabruck,West Kensington,or a small town in Copenhagen.The appreciation of fresh fruit and veggies etc. are just important and a great way to meet the person who grows them instead of going to semi truck traveled product from god knows where to finally arriving for your pickings.I support and believe in the "mom and pop" stores over the corporate grocery chains.I know we all have to go there for something at that's fine,but we can't forget the smaller spots that have to eat,support and raise families of their own.So to all the "mom and pops" places out there you have my love and support.

That's right i said it, vegan Chinese.While sitting at 222 another guest told me to checkout a vegan Chinese place called Peking Palace. Located right off the Archway Underground Station on Haloway Rd. sits next to numerous other restaurants and convenient stores. I arrive right when they open and have my self a seat.The lady who seats me happens to be the wife of the husband/wife ran restaurant. The place is small,pleasant with a orient feel to it,to the light colors of mint green,yellow make it a comfy place.I take a look at the menu,just like a typical Chinese or Thai restaurant,everything numbered,but broken down into categories, appetizers,soups,seafood,meat,vegetables,noodle and rice dishes etc.Everything here is soy based,with the use of soya flour,sietan,tofu,etc.Fresh bean curd with barbecue sauce,tofu seaweed rolls with vegetarian oyster sauce,or the fragrant braised aubergines are some of the choices here.My choice for the evening was the spicy Singapore Noodles,and for a drink i chose the cucumber,green apple and spinach juice.While i wait for my entree i speak with the owners,and talk about how they made they switch form vegetarian to vegan and they "it's the way"pure and simple. Better for the mind and body giving you a calmer spirit and more positive energy omitting the negative.They too just like the other places i ate believe there is no need for meat,or any type of dairy product which could lead to many illnesses.My entree arrives,carrots,cabbage,green onions,yellow onions,bean sprouts all tossed together without that greasy oily texture you're most likely to have along with the spring feeling fresh juice to wash it all down with made a great meal.Also depending on you feel they will reccomend certain choices for you like the smoothies like Gogi Berry Bliss,gogi berries,bananas,dates, and flax seeds,or or a healthy refreshing drink like Skin Tonic,carrots,apples,and parsley.And once again i find another great place eat great tasting and very healthy food.The owners are very nice and well versed in health,and in the food.With prices not exceeding 6 pounds,lunch buffet,free home delivery within 2 miles and also family special set dinners,it too is a must come.

So i told you about the dinner i had,now i decide to come in and have lunch the following day.You have a choice of doing sit-in or take-away buffet lunch.Choices which change daily like ,brown rice,creamy chickpeas,carrot lasagna,carrot tart,veggie stir fry,are some.That what i had for my first plate.my second plate was a mixed bean salad,black eye peas,kidney beans,green lentils,herbs,and shredded carrots was great.Creamy coleslaw with cashew dressing,whole wheat spaghetti tossed in herbs an d a bit of olive oil served cold and a nice mixed green salad finished me off.While i'm eating i meet a young gentleman named Nick from NY now living here with his american girlfriend tells me about the place and how he loves it here and can't stop eating here.Once a meat eater and being overweight he decided to change his diet.So he went completely vegan and says he's in the best shape of his life and also being a triathlete gave him more energy and says he'll never go back to eating meat.I'm quite convinced myself,you can make great tasting dishes and not need the meat,eggs,dairy etc.On my last night i stop by right before the restaurant closes to get a picture and to have a quick chat with him.He too says there's no need for meat and that we must eat more veggies,but just need to educate ourselves.We discuss food,politics and the future of 222.Possibly another location specializing in just take-away.But for now he focuses on just making great food and satisfying his customers.Ben is a humble guy just loving what he does.Other services include catering for parties and a knowledgeable staff about,nut allergies,dietary requirements.They are also a member of The Vegetarian Society and The Vegan Society.Always here and cooking with a full kitchen staff to assist him, makes time to come out to say hello and shake your hand.So support 222,for you will definitely enjoy!

My second night i decide to go for a walk and found Tokyo Fixed Gear shop.I definitely had to make sure to i check this place.Well i finally did.The one stop shop for a true "fixie",with specializing in custom parts as well as wheel building,maintenance etc.You need that saddle that you saw in PEDAL SPEED magazine well more than likely they will have it in stock or they can get it for you.Managed by Max,who i met and rode with at the 2nd Annual London Tweed Run over the weekend is a cool guy who has a true love and passion for bike s as well as the rest of his crew that works there.With frames such as Nagasawa, Cinelli,Leader, Colnago,,wheels like the popular Aerospoke,Velocity Deep V's and other products adorning the walls,floor and counter,even clothing from Dashing Tweeds,BMX bikes, and more this two floor modernesque shop tucked in central London has all your needs.So be sure you stop in and check it out,as they well let you you know about the latest in bike events if you're town for a while.Definitely the hottest shop in town hands down.

His name is Amin Philips.You should have seen the coats!Very tapered,with a futuristic design to them.All Fritz could talk about at that moment was how are we gonna get one of those coats!So we have a discussion about where to get tweed and his ideas and i setup and interview with him sometime later on this trip.So finally on my last day here in London,we finally meet up and he picks me up from the tube station in a town called Leyostone. He pulls up in the "Hart to Hart Mercedes black with tan leather interior and we're off to his work space.We pull up to his place with a sign outside of it saying"Love and be Loved".This is the name of his line.We walk inside and come upon fabric hanging everywhere ,outfits for his customers,future designs,previous designs adorn the walls as well as a great poster of miles davis looming over a old sewing machine.The first floor also consists of his bag making team of two guys working away at straps,constructing belts,sewing ,cutting leather in various colors.We head upstairs to his workspace,where his other part of his team Ali the master sewer and Carrie his assistant,cutting,pressing patterns.Its a tight place but plenty of room for him with rolls upon rolls of beautiful fabric,fabric remnants paint the floor,the whizzing of the sewing as Ali is quickly putting something together,to finished pieces hung up next to hangers full of patterns.As the interview begins,we discuss how it all started,the future of fashion,the comparisons to UK and the states etc.Born in Germany but then moved to London in his early twenties,fashion was in his blood from the first day he was born.He shows me some pics of his parents both dressing to a tee,while explaining that despite racial issues constantly going on througout a daily basis,one was for sure his parents always made sure they looked sharp.Something that was and is known for african americans in the 50's,60's and 70's here in Europe and as well in the states.I show him my bag,my ideas for it and my future of my product.And right away he gives me a course in fashion/product design 101 right there,no hesitation.A laid back,chill,talented brotha with a futuristic mind of fashion and where it should go and why the US seems to lack.I asked him how he describes his clothes,after a few moments he says there really isn't a true definition just that "they are modern clothing" or what he also calls them "cuz i can"wear.During this whole time of laughing and exchanging of pleasant talk,he still works away be it cutting, measuring,or directing orders to Ali or Carrie, but in the end it all about his passion and how his team follows suit.He shows me some of his past and present work.His take on collars is amazing,the shape,literally wind resistant,with a his own couture flair.Not only does he do coats,there's trousers,wedding dresses,skirts,and now his bag line soon coming.This brotha is very very talented,with a simple way of living attitude,uplifting spirit and a eye of course for fashion this man deserves all the credit in the world.I got to try on the black cashmere trenchcoat.I felt like i should be walking down a runway or the streets strutting my stuff.I was thinkin a full on black suit,shoes the whole nine,but he tells me he rather throw on some jeans and a pair of chucks."It's not about having what you think should go with it,but to showcase what's important, the coat".Point taken.At this time Ali is finishing the female version of the trenchcoat but with a totally different fabric.He finally sews on the last shoulder pad and Carrie puts it on.Flat out redonculous!The lines,the angle of the fabric,how it's tapered,and of course the collar which can be worn 3 different ways if not four.I can't wait to get one of theses coats!He also says out of one piece he'll get three even four more pieces out of.A different coat,waist coat,etc.Now i was originally suppose to have a few other interviews today but ended up staying here all day,watching,learning,observing how it's done.I can not wait for the day to see his work on the runway.You'll find me right up front cheering him on.Brotha Amin,Carrie,Ali,and the rest of the team at Love and be Loved clothing i wish the best for you and your future ,you have all my blessings!Oh a brotha will need to get a pair a trousers and that coat for my birthday!LOL!

My first weekend here,my new friend and guide Fritz,takes me down to Spitalfields Market and Brick Lane.A very if not the most popular place to go on the weekend,to shop for clothes,art,and of course food.As some of you know I'm into making bags/satchels made of tweed wool and leather and this is one of the places to come and find some.So as we're walking thru a crowded area full of arts and crafts made by locals,such as the famous artist known as "Banksy" on t-shirts,coasters,to used clothing,and "known but unknown designers" we come upon a stall.Tweed coats of various colors and unique design,tapered waists,stylish collars,made me and Fritz want to know who was making these and where to get the tweed.A young brotha sporting dreds and also wearing one of his signature coats,we approach him and shake hands.

"Lively,relaxing,inviting atmosphere".Is what one customer said about 222 Vegan/Vegetarian restaurant located in West Kensington.It's about 7pm and i arrive at a full house,full of laughs,smiles,small talk,and the smell of great food being prepared by the Chef Ben Asamani.Born in Ghana,raised a vegetarian,food to him is not a lifestyle it's a way of life."Artistic healthy food on a plate" another customer said.I'm looking at everyone's plate,full,vibrant,and lot's of love as you can tell from the eyes of the guests as their entree's or desserts are placed in front of them.I ask the lady next to me what should i order,she tells me to get the Ben's Special.A West Indian Vegetable stir fry consisting of snap peas,green beans,carrots,broccoli,bell peppers,zucchini,baby corn,red onions, with smoked seitan strips,nicely spiced atop a bed of brown rice."Satisfying,delicious,plentiful",another couple said to me.With laughs,exchanging of positive energy,friendly staff,along with the simple yet elegant dining room,you feel as if must eat here.My plate arrives and it looks amazing.The colors on the plate bright from the slight stir fry to the vegetables,the smokiness of the seitan strips,art on a plate.A nice spice,the veggies have a crunch to them and i'm enjoying every bite.While eating i browse the rest of the menu and chat it up with a guest sitting next to me.Other entrees include the popular 222 Gardens,which is baked plantains,okra,falafel,marinated aubergines and courgettes in a tomato sauce or the Broccolini Di Parma,whole wheat pancakes stuffed with tofu cottage cheese broccoli and pimento sauce served with sauteed potatoes all make me hungry wishing i had more time here to try the others.Starters such as the Back eye bean and tofu pate wrapped in a whole meal pancake,or avocado pomodoro,salads like the sun dried tomato and artichokes,or the roasted courgettes and aubergines marinated in organic tamari soya sauce,all sound satisfying.Sides like the baked plantains, boiled yams,or something to wash it down with like a freshly made juice like pomegranate and apple,carrot and apple with ginger (as an option) or the Classico smoothie orange juice,bananas,and strawberries,tea,organic white and red wine is available too.Now once dinner is finished and you are a bit relaxed try the 222 Pancake,which is vegan vanilla ice cream wrapped in a wholemeal,topped with warm vanilla and chocolate sauce is just a sight to see before you even eat it or if you are in the mood for something light a bowl of fresh fruit is available.With nothing more than ten pounds,this a definite choice to come and check out.Also being here 5 years ranked as #4 in the top ten Veggie Restaurants in Britain by Vegetarian Guide in 2006 makes it a must come.Just a couple blocks away from the West Kensington Underground station,open 7 days a week from 530-1030 for dinner and for lunch noon-330.In the next i'll tell you about the lunch i had here.

These are just some of the words i can tell you about such as glorious event!Thanks to Teddy and Jacqui (the organizers) for all the hard work and beyond extra effort to make sure that our DAPPERNESS was well liked and appreciated!From three piece suits to waistcoats and plus fours,straw hats with feathers accompanied with elegant dresses,sweater vest,bow ties,deerstalkers,were what was worn yesterday at the 400 plus 2nd Annual London Tweed Run.A 14 mile cruise thru central london taking thru ,Hyde Park,Kensington Gardens, Saville Row,Trafalgar Square and so forth,showcasing to the public bye paying homage to the past of wearing and being dapper on a bicycle.With the streets already packed with people shopping,some were suprised,in awe,amazed,intrigued,by the cycling mass of "proper" gents and ladies strolling thru town.With people coming from every corner of the globe just to be a part of it,this was a sure sight to see.Hip flasks of gin,whiskey,cider,tea,and cheese and crackers,cucumber sandwiches for a nice break at Hyde Park was nice with the sun gleaming upon everyone for an enjoyable day.The bikes!Oh the bikes! Holdsworth,Mercian,Bob Jackson,Raleigh,Nagasawa,Claude Butler,Colnago,the really cool steam pump bike,Penny Farthings,the mini Penny Farthing,Tandems,Step Through,colors of royal blue,red,chrome,brown,green,powder blue, turquoise,white,it was all there!I even had a chance to ride along side Guy Hills the famous tailor and founder of Dashing Tweeds.Chatting it up about fashion,fabric and the future of it.We arrive at the final stop a pub for drinks,cheers,laughs,dancing,singing,shopping,prizes,and browsing of all the sweet bikes that were there.With "Mr. B.The Styling Gentleman playing his rap tunes live with his banjo also made for a entertaining evening.Now the contests were best dapper gent,best dapper lady,best vintage,bike,best decorated bike,and best attitude "class".I entered for dapper gent,but the competition was stiff,i didn't win but it was well worth just being here!But i did win in a raffle a limited edition of 100 copies,a book by a famous shirt maker with patterns,pics,and actual pattern on the inside and the step by step process of how a suit is made,that was awesome!Prizes ranged from a full roll of Harris Tweed,a limited edition Brooks Ostrich saddle,a blazer from Huntsman etc.Seven o clock approaches and the day has come to a close.Exchanging of pictures,phone numbers and emails,hugs,and hand shakes with final good byes wa s great finish.Once again thatnks to Teddy and Jacqui for putting this on and understanding that it's ok look nice on a bike!And to everyone i met,exchanged a laugh,told a story with,it was a pure pleasureand hopefully i'll see you next year!CHEERS!

That's right my cycling friends!Two days till the 2nd Annual London Tweed Run!My outfit is just about done and i'm looking forward to have a splendid but dapper saturday.I spoke with the organizer Teddy and he told me it will be 500 cyclists,with atleast a bit more than half coming from across the globe .This will be one of the largest cycling events of the year!Plus fours,Harris Tweed jackets,hip flasks,penny farthings,argyle socks,cycling capes,antique cufflinks,classic bikes and loads of smiles!With other cities such as Seattle,Portland,San Diego,Dallas,DC,NY,hosting their first ones last year or this year the second ones will definitely be larger and constantly grow each year.I hope to do this event a couple more times.Being a part of a positive bike culture you can't really ask for more!So thanks alot Teddy and Jacqui for starting this and hopefully sometime in the future w'e'll all start dressing dapper again like the old days.CHEERS!

So a few days ago i was out walking around and found this old double-decker english bus that was converted to a restaurant,named "Vegan Routes" serving of course vegan food.I met the Hemedy owner and told him i'll be back for lunch.So the following day i come in for lunch and have the sweet potato and cauliflower soup with a slice of banana leaf bread.That was a great lunch!The bread was light,moist,brittle like with plenty of flavor.And of course the soup was sliky smooth with a dash of herb salt was a nice finish.After that i knew i was coming back for more!The second soup i had was the butternut squash soup with coconut milk and a slice of herbed cassava root bread.Now for all you vegans and non vegans out there,this is the place to come and eat no hesitation!After i finished my meal i chatted up with him while he prepares for lunch.We discuss his background,the business,politics ,travel and of course food!Born in Congo,raised vegan talks about how we are treating our body and how meat is not needed and that vegetable recipes are endless.During the conversation he prepares a drink for me,beetroot,carrot,ginger juice.That was real fire power, a real nice wakeup!I'm not a coffee drinker but, this is what people should be drinking in the morning or throughout the day!A few minutes and one of his employees arrive a young lady from Czech Republic says hello and goes directly to work.While she's prepping away, Hemedy is prepping hummus.Citrus flavored hummus served with celery and carrots sticks is a nice starter! He preps away and i take glance at his menu.A fairly small menu with a daily special and entree choice such as,leeks sauteed with coconut milk served with farinata and salad consisting of beans sprouts,beetroot and spinach.Or the shepherds pie (my favorite) with lentils,butternut squash,carrots,onions and mash potatoes.Along with various hot teas and great tasting juices,the desserts are a perfect finisher.With great choice like the carrot ginger cake,the light and decadent chocolate bars (three varieties),or the muffins such as the ginger crumble which is good with the pleasure tea which is a chocolate flavored tea or the 3 mixed berry muffin.The staff which is from different parts of the globe are humble,laid back,super friendly chill folk,and also take part in new menu ideas.Not only is this place serving organic vegan food it is also earth conscious.Other services include catering,private parties,and delivery.The plates,cups,utensils,even the serving try are made of recycled paper.The in particular are made of banana leaf which can be used over and over again as long as they don't get too wet,while the staff encourages you to take them home and use them.Everything here is 100% organic,wheat free,gluten free,dairy free,cholesterol free, and GMO free.With a great chef with a passion for food, equality, peace,and loving life,he has truly created a haven amongst the cement, brick and car crazy street.Not only has he gained a new customer but has gained a new fan and friend!Blessing Hemedy,my brotha.

Got up today and headed to Camden Market.This place is massive.Its just blocks and blocks of just about anything you can think of thrifty gear,various street food,high end clothing such as All Saints(i recommend you goto that store,the best denim store i've ever seen!),and all the crafts and bizarre things made out of just anything.So Fritch and i shopped,checked out some gear,bought a few things and had some great food.Also whats cool about this place is the Camden locks.Where you can go for a boat tour thru the channel for a small fee,don't forget to bring your camera.Now as for food,there was Ethiopian which is what i had.A vegetarian wrap with soya wet,gomen wet and shuro wet wrapped in the traditional (Injera).A side of sauteed cabbage and carrots with a hint of curry for color was perfect sized dish for $4.50.After downing we went for a stroll and found a South African Bbq spot,you know i had to try this!Anyone here ever had ostrich,better yet,has anyone seen the size of an ostrich egg!?I ask the owner what should i have?He told me the ostrich burger,which came red onions,tomatoes,a sweet and sour sauce and zesty hot sauce on a bun just how he has it back home in his hometown, Bethlehem.A dark meat which looked like ground beef was grilled with a nice charring on each side was prepared paid $4.50 and gave it a bite!Dam it was tender,the sweet and spice sauces worked great,about a 1/4 pound patty had no game taste to it,and when i finished i didn't feel full like you usually do when eating beef.Definitely would like to come back to this spot to try the Boreworitch Sausage,which i will explain on the next visit.After those bites,we checked out some more stalls,like african artifacts from Fritch's country Cameroon while getting a history as well.All in all a great day and plenty to see.So for sure when you come London,come check out Camden Market,mostly a Friday,Saturday,Sunday,but there are quite a few shops open during the week.So come with and empty stomach,a bit of patience because of the crowds and a few friends to have a great time!

Well today was loads of fun! Me and my new friend Fritz takes me to Brick Lane and the Spitafields Market. Held only on saturdays and sundays,this is the place to be on any weekend!You can find whatever you want out here from great tasting street food ranging from Chinese, Moroccan, Sri Lankan, Jamaican, Japanese, Argentinean, Thai, Ethiopian and more. With prices starting at about 2 pounds the food is plentiful and really good! First I started with the veggie tangine at the Moroccan stand. Chickpeas,cauliflower,kidney beans,onions,tomatoes curry,broccoli sit atop some jasmine rice,now that was filling for $4.50! So of course i had to let the stomach as we pass African Argentinean,Japanese and more!Now Brick Lane is basically a neighborhood size market filled with whatever you are looking for.From $300 dollar jeans at All Saints to cool thrifty clothes,jewelry,bags,at a very affordable price or even a slick fixed gear or road bike.This place is packed so you should get here early,especially of the weather is nice!Just take the bus for 2 pounds than taking the train which is a bit expensive,which the locals say and you're there in no time.Plus if you're coming from central london you'll actually see the giant St. Paul Cathedral on the way there.so sit upstairs on the double decker bus for a great view and pics.So after checking out some hot clothing stores we head over to check Mama's Jerk Chicken stand.I order the jerk chicken wrap,with mixed greens,chicken,pepper sauce and mango mayo.That was pretty good!Fritz pick's up some fresh made empanadas and i grab a slice of rum cake from a Jamaican dessert stand to finish the day.Great food,hot fashion,and fun times.Stay tuned for video also.

Since it's Easter weekend alot of places were closed till Tuesday.Now if any of you didn't know i make bags/satchel out of tweed and wool in variations of colors.London is the king of tweed here because of there top of the line suit making.So i picked up some fabric for a few new bags to start on.Then besides that i decided to have some lunch at this great food stand.Vegan routes which specializes in vegan food is a old double decker bus converted into a street stand.But you'll hear more about that in the video next week.So for lunch i order the butternut squash soup with coconut milk and cassava root wheat free/gluten free bread.That was good!I hope he'll give me the recipe!So after a few hours of chilling i decide to head out for a night stroll to take some night photos.Well as i was walking around i found Saville Row.I love fashion and i believe you should be dapper whenever you go out.So here are some pics from there,Gieves and Hawkes,Huntsman,etc.

After riding around parts of London by bus,it was time to head to Brixton,and head to a town called Herne Hill.There they have London's first ever velodrome which was built in 1897.Every first Friday they hold an event called Good Friday.It's where the best track cyclists in all of London compete on a 400 meter track.After a good walk i arrive at the track with hopes of seeing full stands,booths selling or promoting cycling the whizzing of cyclists flying by as the crowd cheers on.But nope!Not today,the weather has been like home (Seattle) raining,having to cancel the event.So after a few pics of track and a couple questions from the coordinator Gary,he tells me down the road at Half Moon Pub they are holding the Rolapalooza Roller Races.Why not check that out for my fun tonight!I get there and you know it's the place the front of the pub is covered in bikes,cycling chatting it up outside while on the inside,well you know what you do at a pub!I meet DJ Banana and he tells me later this evening there having the quarter,semis, and finals for the men and women.The place begins to fill up fast as beer is being passed songs being sang and constant cheers of friends cheering their buddies on.As the races start,the place is getting packed with songs,by Snoop,Madlib,AC/DC and more are blaring through the speakers.There are 16 men and 8 women,with two bikes donated by Brixton Cycles,placed on rollers with two digital timers behind them and a reader showing how fast they are going against each other in a 500 meter sprint.All night there's some tight races and theres a couple blowouts.It gets down to the final four for the guys and the final for the women.The race for the women was ridiculous!They were neck and neck with the blonde on the left (Nadine) beating her opponent slash actual teammate by 7 tenths of a second! Now for the semis and final for the men was different story.Both races were neck and neck.With the final being the guy on the right (Miles) who's had the fastest time all night who is a true track sprinter,going up against the fastest folding bike champion in all of London!That's right i said folding bike champion.The Rocky soundtrack is blaring hard as the two mount their bike and strap in.Once the clock is reset,the emcee for night tells everyone to quiet the crowd as he calls"Ready,Set.......GO!It is neck and neck,with legs spinning like mad bikes vibrating even though friends are holding them down,crowd screams with just under 100 meters to go and the winner is................Miles by 1 tenth of a second!Miles 20.99 and his opponent 21.00!Dam that was some great racing!Here's the footage of the final for the men and women with some pics also.

First day in London.....

Well after getting in at 2am this morning,i wasn't really sure if i was gonna go hang in the city.But sure enough at 8 am this morning i was up and out the door at 9.First thing after talking to my lady headed to Bobbin Cycles to pick up my registration packet.So after about a 40 minute walk i arrive and they don't open for another 20 minutes,so i went for a stroll.London is cool!All sorts of boutiques consisting of ladies wear,crafts,vintage shops,and really dope menswear shops!I check out a couple shops and definitely know i'll be heading back to pickup a couple things.I arrive back at Bobbin and they had just opened.The staff was cool,laid back,friendly and courteous.It's a little shop consisting of 3 speeds,panniers,clothing of course brooks saddles and more.But you'll see in the video in a couple days.After having a nice conversation and picking up my packet which consisted of my spoke card, wool arm sash, The Brooks Bugle, London bike map, bike food energy bar, and two great booklets,one on the tailoring and tradition of Huntsman and the other on ten years of the history of dandyism with a nice bag to go with it, thanks Ted!(organizer for the Tweed Run),i'm off.They also gave me directions to couple other places to check out alsoWhich you will see in the video. All in all it was a great day! Got some interviews and filming setup,going to check out an all day cycling event at the velodrome in Herne Hill tomorrow. So plenty of work to and of course food to eat also.I found a Jamaican spot near Bobbin serving ,Ackee& Saltfish,Patties,Calaloo,Jerk Chicken,and more. Plus all the butcher shops and patisseries which hopefully i can get some video too.So it's going to be a great weekend looks like it!So until then, PEACE!

The new velodrome in London

Right now in London they are constructing a a velodrome which will be ready for the 2012 Olympics.Located in the Olympic Park it will host the Olympic and Paralympic Track Cycling Events.With over 6,000 seats,this velodrome will also after the Olympics be used by professional cyclists as well as the local community.A cafe,cycling work facilities,a road cycle and mountain bike course will also be constructed making it a all in one Velodrome for all facets.I'll be sure to try to get to the construction site to get some pics.Man we need an indoor velodrome in Seattle for real!
